Salty (lavana)
In Ayurveda, the salty taste, known as lavana, is associated with the elements of water and fire and should be consumed in moderation to prevent doshic imbalance. It is heavy, hot, oily and hydrophilic, meaning it draws water and supports fluid retention in the body.
Salty taste is heating yet grounding, and in moderation, it stimulates salivation, digestion, and appetite, while also acting as a mild laxative and promoting absorption and elimination of nutrients.
Salty herbs are rare, and dosage is key. They reduce excess vata by stimulating the appetite and moistening dryness. However, they aggravate pitta and kapha. They are not recommended for people with skin diseases or bleeding issues.
