Immunomodulant
Immunomodulants restore balance to a dysfunctional immune system either by stimulating a weakened immune system or suppressing an overactive one. They can act through modulation of cytokines, enhancing the activity and proliferation of immune cells including T-cells, natural killer cells, and macrophages.
They can also exhibit anti-inflammatory effects by reducing pro-inflammatory cytokines while increasing anti-inflammatory cytokines. Immunomodulants can be applied to help manage chronic immunological conditions including psoriasis, inflammatory bowel disease or rheumatoid arthritis.
Examples of immunomodulant herbs include reishi (Ganoderma lucidum), astragalus (Astragalus membranaceus) and cordyceps (Cordyceps sinensis).
