Vulnerary
A vulnerary is a herb that promotes wound healing both internally and externally. Vulneraries promote tissue repair, reduce inflammation, prevent infection and help to contract tissue and reduce bleeding.
Many vulnerary herbs contain tanning which bind tissue proteins to close wounds and reduce bleeding through an additional astringent action, for example witch hazel (Hamamelis virginiana) and shepherd’s purse (Capsella bursa-pastoris) which staunch bleeding and promote scab formation.
Vulneraries may also have mucilaginous effects which help to soothe inflammation by coating the damaged area and promoting healing. Examples of mucilaginous vulneraries include plantain (Plantago lanceolata, P. major) and selfheal (Prunella vulgaris).
