Sweet
The sweet taste is due to the activation of sweet taste receptors (TAS1R2 and TAS1R3) on the tongue which respond to sugars. The taste signals the presence of carbohydrates which are often associated with nourishment and comfort. Sweetness is associated with nourishing and tonic remedies which help to build energy and strengthen the tissues.
Sweet remedies can be used to restore balance, especially in convalescence or recovery from illness. Energetically, sweetness soothes and replenishes.
Examples of sweet herbs include cinnamon (Cinnamomum verum), marshmallow root (Althaea officinalis) and liquorice (Glycyrrhiza glabra).
