Cardiotonic
Cardiotonics are plants that help to strengthen and support the heart by enhancing the force and efficiency of cardiac contraction, producing what is termed a positively inotropic effect. This action improves cardiac output, stabilises heart rhythm and supports systemic circulation.
Cardiotonics exert their effect through multiple phytoconstituents including cardiac glucosides, alkaloids and flavonoids which influence calcium regulation and modulation of the sodium–potassium pump to support electrical conduction. They can be applied to support conditions of the cardiovascular system including cardiac insufficiency, palpitations and hypo- or hypertension.
Examples include hawthorn (Crataegus monogyna), motherwort (Leonurus cardiaca) and lily of the valley (Convallaria majalis).
