Aromatically transform damp (fang xiang hua shi)
Herbs that aromatically transform damp (fang xiang hua shi) are fragrant medicinals that enhance the transforming and transporting function of the Spleen, dissolving, drying or dispersing dampness and substances, whole accumulation would lead to damp obstruction.
Their aromatic property is due to their high essential oil content which evaporates easily and so should be added towards the end of the decocting process. Their warming and drying properties can also consume yin and body fluids, so they should not be used long-term in cases where these are deficient.
Common examples include cang zhu (black atractylodes, Atractylodis lanceae), hou po (magnolia bark, Magnolia officinalis), huo xiang (patchouli, Agastache rugosa) and sha ren (cardamom seed, Amomum villosum).
