Demulcent
Demulcent herbs are rich in mucilage content, helping to soothe, moisten and offer protective effects to irritated, damaged or inflamed tissues. The mechanism of action results from the polysaccharides that form a mucilaginous coating over mucous membranes offering a protective layer and reducing inflammation. This helps to repair tissues as well as promote hydration of the affected area.
Demulcents can be used internally or externally to relieve dryness, irritation or abrasions in cases of sore throats, burns or gastritis.
Examples include slippery elm bark (Ulmus rubra), marshmallow root (Althaea officinalis), and limeflower (Tilia cordata).
