肝 gān is the solid, yin organ (藏 záng) related to the wood phase. It governs the smooth flow of qi, generates the sinews and manifests in the nails.
It rules over the eyes and stores the Blood when we sleep. In the spiritual realm, it houses the ethereal soul (魂 hún) and is responsible for dreams. It also makes plans in waking life, being compared to a military general, deliberating strategies. This causes anger when plans are frustrated, disrupting the free flow of qi, creating disturbances throughout the system.
Its yin–yang property is considered reversing yin (厥陰 or 厥阴 juéyīn).
