Blood (rakta dhatu)
Rakta dhatu, the blood tissue in Ayurveda, nourishes the body, supports life, and governs vitality, skin color, and sensory functions. It forms from rasa dhatu and circulates through the heart, liver, and vessels. It carries oxygen, nutrients, and life energy (prana).
Balanced rakta ensures clear skin, strength, and mental sharpness, while imbalance causes heat, inflammation, fatigue, or pallor. Its byproducts include tendons and blood vessels, and it closely interacts with pitta dosha, influencing physical and emotional health.
Herbs that increase blood are sweet and sour in taste — amalaki (Phyllanthus emblica), or salty — shilajit (Asphaltum punjabianum). Herbs that reduce blood are bitter alteratives, such as neem (Azadirachta indica), manjistha (Rubia cordifolia) and guduchi (Tinospera cordifolia).
