Promotes the menses (artava janana)
Artava Janana herbs stimulate and regulate menstrual flow by enhancing uterine circulation, clearing stagnation and balancing vata and pitta dosha in the reproductive system. They are often katu (pungent), tikta (bitter) or kashaya (astringent), with warming, mobilising energetics that encourage healthy shedding of the endometrium.
A key example is bola or myrrh (Commiphora myrrha), renowned for its ability to dispel stagnation and support pelvic blood flow. Other supportive herbs include hing (Ferula asafoetida), strongly warming and antispasmodic, and kumari (Aloe barbadensis), which gently stimulates menstruation while soothing heat and inflammation. These herbs help restore rhythmic, unobstructed menstrual cycles.
