Carminative
Carminative herbs aid digestion by supporting the gastrointestinal tract and reducing discomfort caused by gas, bloating and spasms. These herbs are often rich in essential oils which help to relax smooth muscle in the gut, promoting peristalsis and optimal digestive function. The mechanism can also improve digestion by stimulating gastric secretions and increasing absorption whilst also calming nervous tension which may be a factor in digestive disturbance.
Carminative herbs are often also aromatic and mildly warming, helping to balance cold or stagnant conditions. Examples include aniseed (Pimpinella anisum), fennel seed (Foeniculum vulgare), and chamomile (Matricaria chamomilla).
