Amphoteric
Amphoterics are herbs that balance and normalise the function of an organ. Amphoteric herbs are able to act bidirectionally dependent on the change needed to restore homeostasis. They often act on the endocrine system, including the hypothalamic-pituitary axis (HPA), to promote hormonal equilibrium. Their mechanisms are varied and include modulating physiological functions such as increasing or decreasing blood pressure or hormonal activity. They can be applied to conditions of the cardiovascular, reproductive or endocrine system.
Examples of amphoteric herbs include liquorice (Glycyrrhiza glabra), hawthorn (Crataegus monogyna), agnus castus (Vitex agnus-castus) and black cohosh (Actaea racemosa).
