Alterative
Alteratives help to restore and improve systemic health by influencing metabolism to support tissue function and waste elimination. The mechanism of action by which they impact the body involves enhancing the detox pathways through the liver, kidneys, lungs, large intestine or lymphatic system. Alteratives often also stimulate digestive processes, promote lymphatic circulation and support the elimination of toxic metabolites through renal or hepatic excretion. These herbs are also known as depuratives. They can be applied to treat conditions such as eczema, psoriasis or chronic immunological conditions. Examples include burdock root (Arctium lappa), dandelion root (Taraxacum officinale), cleavers (Galium aparine) and poke root (Phytolacca decandra).
In our Herbcast, Sebastian and Graeme dissect the controversial and often misunderstood category of alteratives. Watch “Herbs for cleansing: The Alteratives with Graeme Tobyn“.
