Strong laxative (virechana)
Virechana herbs are Ayurvedic purgatives that promote downward elimination, helping clear excess pitta dosha and removing accumulated ama (undigested residues) from the digestive tract. Their primary action is to loosen and expel toxins, heat and stagnant material from the small intestine and liver, restoring digestive clarity and balance.
Haritaki (Terminalia chebula) is one of the most potent examples, renowned for its ability to cleanse without overly weakening the system. Other classical virechana herbs include trivrut (Operculina turpethum), castor oil (Ricinus communis) and grapes known as draksha (Vitis vinifera), each supporting gentle but effective purification and downward movement of wastes.
