Muscle (mamsa dhatu)
Mamsa dhatu, in Ayurveda, refers to the muscle tissue that provides structural integrity to the body. It is responsible for protecting vital structures and ensuring physical robustness and mobility. It is vital for the structural and functional coherence of the body, underpinning physical activities while fostering mental and spiritual wellbeing.
It is the third dhatu generated in the body, arising after the blood tissue, and is essential for bodily nourishment.
Herbs that increase muscle are sweet and heavy — e.g., ashwagandha (Withania somnifera), bala (Sida cordifolia), liquorice (Glycyrrhiza glabra).
Herbs that reduce muscle are blood movers — e.g., guggul (Commiphora mukul), turmeric (Curcuma longa), manjistha (Rubia cordifolia).
