Fat (meda dhatu)
Fatty tissue plays a crucial role in maintaining moisture between organs, storing energy, and regulating internal temperature. It is formed from the refined part of muscle tissue and also includes the oil in your skin and protective layers around your organs. Its water element gives it fluid and mobile qualities, with the earth element providing stability and structure. Imbalances lead to weight problems, dry skin, or being too heavy or too thin.
Herbs that increase fat are sweet, unctuous and heavy — e.g., shatavari (Asparagus racemosus), ashwagandha (Withania somnifera) and liquorice (Glycyrrhiza glabra). Herbs that reduce fat are bitter and pungent in taste — e.g., jatamansi (Nardostachys jatamansi), brahmi (Bacopa monnieri), guggul (Commiphora mukul) and shilajit (Asphaltum punjabianum).
