Bones (asthi dhatu)
In Ayurveda, asthi dhatu represents bone tissue, essential for skeletal support and structure. It is formed from meda (fat tissue) and nourished through proper digestion and lifestyle. Asthi dhatu is influenced by vata dosha, which governs movement. Imbalances may lead to conditions like osteoporosis.
Healthy bone fosters vitality, determines physical strength, and supports the body’s overall stability and function. Herbs that increase bone are hard and resinous that work via blood to nourish — e.g., guggul (Commiphora mukul) and boswellia (Boswellia serrata). Herbs that reduce bone are bitter and pungent in taste — e.g., trikatu and turmeric (Curcuma longa).
