Digestive tonic
Digestive tonics help to strengthen, restore and normalise efficient digestive function by supporting the gastrointestinal organs, including the stomach, liver and gallbladder. Their actions could include stimulation of gastric secretions or bile flow, facilitation of nutrient absorption or promotion of elimination.
The pharmacological activities of digestive tonics can be varied and they are often multifaceted in their approach, often functioning as bitters, carminatives, cholagogues or choleretics as well. They can be prescribed for treatment of bloating, sluggish digestion, microbiome dysregulation, poor appetite or liver insufficiency.
Examples include globe artichoke (Cynara scolymus), chamomile (Matricaria chamomilla) and dandelion root (Taraxacum officinale).
