Antihyperlipidaemic
Antihyperlipidaemic herbs help to lower cholesterol and triglyceride levels in the blood helping to support cardiovascular health and reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease, including atherosclerosis. These herbs act by promoting bile secretion, thereby helping the body to enhance lipid metabolism and reduce intestinal absorption of cholesterol. They can also inhibit the synthesis of cholesterol through inhibition of enzymes involved in lipid oxidation.
Some of these herbs also have antioxidant actions, helping to offer protective qualities for the cardiovascular system. Examples include garlic (Allium sativum), olive leaf (Olea europea), hibiscus (Hibiscus sabdariffa, H. rosa-sinensis), bilberry (Vaccinium myrtillus) and green tea (Camellia sinensis).
