Pungent (katu)
The pungent taste, known as katu, is characterised by its heating and stimulating properties. It is found in foods like chillies (Capsicum spp.), garlic (Allium sativum), and ginger (Zingiber officinale), which contain elements of fire and air, making them invigorating and beneficial for digestion. The pungent taste is known to boost metabolism, improve circulation, and clear mucus congestion, while it can pacify kapha dosha but may aggravate pitta and vata doshas if consumed in excess.
Pungent herbs have hot, dry and light qualities, which dry excess moisture and mucus, indicating them in kapha conditions. However, they can aggravate pitta. Useful for respiratory congestion, weight loss, and detoxification.
