Antiemetic
Antiemetic herbs help to prevent or reduce nausea and vomiting through different mechanisms. They can elicit this effect by antagonising 5-HT3 (serotonin) receptors in the gastrointestinal tract and central nervous system which are responsible for inducing vomiting and nausea.
Some also inhibit GABA receptors which help to calm the nervous system’s emetic response. These herbs can be applied to help reduce feelings of nausea during infections and pregnancy.
Examples include ginger (Zingiber officinale), meadowsweet (Filipendula ulmaria), chamomile (Matricaria chamomilla) and peppermint (Mentha x piperita).
