Unctuous (snigdha)
Unctuousness is the oily and moist quality in Ayurveda that nourishes, lubricates, countering vata’s dryness. This guna embodies oiliness, smoothness, moisture, heaviness, and stability, deriving from the earth and water elements. It moistens tissues, supports joint flexibility, nourishes muscles and bone marrow, supports fertility and promotes smooth bodily functions.
Psychologically, it fosters calmness, emotional stability, and vitality. Therapeutically, snigdha enhances digestion, and prevents tissue degeneration.
Foods, herbs and treatments rich in unctuousness, such as ghee, oils, avocados, and nuts, are usually sweet in taste, and heavy. They contain a high content of volatile oils, mucilage or essential fatty acids.
