Strong purgatives (bhedaniya)
Bhedaniya herbs are strong purgatives in Ayurveda that forcefully expel both the solid and liquid components of stool, clearing deep‑seated pitta dosha, ama, and biliary congestion from the intestines. Their action is more intense than standard virechana herbs, producing a sharp downward movement that rapidly empties the bowels.
Kutki (Picrorhiza kurroa) exhibits this effect at higher doses, powerfully stimulating bile flow and intestinal clearance. Salt, particularly saindhava or other mineral salts, also acts as a strong purgative by drawing water into the intestines and promoting swift evacuation. Trivrut (Operculina turpethum) is another herbal example. All are contraindicated in pregnancy.
