Salty
The salty flavour is immediately distinctive and arises from the activation of sodium ion channels in taste receptor cells on the tongue. Salty herbs also often have moistening, relaxing and softening effects on tissues, helping to dissolve hard accumulations and relax hardened tissues.
The salty flavor creates moisture and heat, a sinking and heavy effect which is very grounding for the nervous system and encourages stability. These herbs encourage fluid balance and can aid in elimination through movement of water and minerals within the body.
Examples include bladderwrack (Fucus vesiculosus), nettle (Urtica diocia) and horsetail (Equisetum arvense).
