Heavy (guru)
In Ayurveda, heavy qualities are associated with earth and water elements. It increases kapha dosha while pacifying vata and pitta. It fosters steadiness, stability, and bodily resilience, but overuse may lead to lethargy, constipation, slow metabolism, and weight gain. Sleep, restful practices, and nutrient-dense foods exemplify heavy qualities.
Balancing the heavy guna with light, sharp, or mobile qualities prevents excessive kapha accumulation. Foods, herbs, or activities with heavy guna are slow to digest, rich, dense, and often sedative, such as meat, cheese, and oils. Heavy natured herbs are often sweet, salty or sour. Roots, resins, nuts and barks are often heavy.
