Thymoleptic
Thymoleptic herbs elevate the mood and help lift the spirits, helping to counteract symptoms of depression or low emotional states. Their mechanism of action involves modulation of central neurotransmitters such as serotonin, dopamine and noradrenaline.
Thymoleptic herbs act similarly to nervines and can also have adaptogenic qualities, as well as having hormone balancing effects and antioxidant effects. They can be applied to help with feelings of low mood, low energy, stress, fatigue or depressive states.
Examples of thymoleptics include rhodiola (Rhodiola rosea), ginseng (Panax ginseng), damiana (Turnera diffusa), saffron (Crocus sativus) and lavender (Lavandula angustifolia).
