Emollient
Emollient herbs are typically applied topically to soothe and protect the skin by forming a protective barrier which helps to retain moisture and soften the skin. Emollient herbs often also have mucilaginous or demulcent properties which help to hydrate the skin, reduce inflammation and promote tissue repair.
Emollients are indicated in the treatment of dry, itchy, inflamed or irritated skin conditions including eczema, dermatitis, psoriasis or burns. Examples include marshmallow root (Althaea officinalis), oatstraw (Avena sativa) and chickweed (Stellaria media).
