Bland
淡 dàn, also translatable as dull, plain or tasteless, is sometimes considered the sixth flavour in Chinese medicine. The neutral nature of these herbs mean they tend to have an affinity for controlling the Centre, the Spleen and Stomach, leaching out dampness and draining it through the urine with diuretic properties.
They are exemplified by medicinal mushrooms such as poria (fu ling, Poria cocos) and polyporus (zhu ling, Polyporus umbellatus).
