Toxin digester (pachana)
Pachana herbs directly digest and metabolise ama, the sticky, toxic by‑product of incomplete digestion. Unlike deepana herbs, which primarily stimulate agni, they work more specifically on breaking down existing ama without necessarily increasing digestive fire. Thet are typically light, sharp and penetrating, helping to clear sluggishness, coating, and obstruction in the gut and channels.
Triphala is a classic example: its three fruits gently detoxify, scrape residues, and restore the digestive tract. Other pachana herbs include dry ginger (Zingiber officinale), black pepper (Piper nigrum), and pippali (Piper longum). Ama pachana is a foundational step before other Ayurvedic treatments like panchakarma (cleansing) or rasayana (rejuvenation) therapies.
