Tissue scrubbing (chedana)
Chedana herbs are described in Ayurveda as agents that actively draw out toxins lodged deep within the tissues, almost ‘scratching’ or dislodging them so they can be expelled. Their actions are penetrating, sharp and mobilising, making them especially useful when ama (metabolic waste) has become embedded in the dhatus (tissues).
Guggul (Commiphora mukul) is a classic example, renowned for its scraping (lekhana) and detoxifying qualities. Shilajit (Asphaltum) penetrates deeply, enhancing cellular metabolism and dislodging stubborn impurities. Black pepper (Piper nigrum) stimulates digestion and bioavailability, helping mobilise toxins from deeper tissues. Chedana herbs support profound internal cleansing and metabolic clarity.
