Eyesight improver (chakshushya)
Chakshushya are herbs that nourish and strengthen the eyes, supporting vision, ocular moisture and the health of alochaka pitta, the subtype of pitta responsible for sight. They typically exhibit madhura (sweet) and amla (sour) rasa, sheeta virya (cooling potency), and madhura vipaka, which collectively soothe heat, reduce inflammation, and rejuvenate eye tissues.
A classic example is amalaki (Phyllanthus officinalis), renowned for its high vitamin C content and potent rasayana effects. Other notable chakshushya herbs include triphala (a blend of Emblica officinalis, Terminalia chebula, Terminalia bellirica) and punarnava (Boerhavia diffusa) and shatavari (Asparagus racemosus) all traditionally used to support clear, healthy vision.
