Cathartics (rechana)
Rechana herbs are strong cathartics that stimulate vigorous bowel evacuation, often producing semi‑solid or loose stools to clear accumulated waste from the intestines. They are used when deeper cleansing is required, particularly in kapha or pitta dosha excess, or during panchakarma procedures such as virechana.
Classic examples include castor oil (Ricinus communis), a potent purgative that lubricates and expels intestinal contents, and rhubarb root (Rheum officinale/ R. palmatum), which combines laxative anthraquinones with astringent tannins for a balanced purgative effect. Other notable rechana herbs include aloe vera and trivrut (Operculina turpethum), both widely used in Ayurvedic detoxification.
