Catalysing (yogavahi)
Yogavahi are catalyst substances that enhance, direct or amplify the action of other herbs without overshadowing their primary effects. They act as intelligent carriers, improving absorption, potency, and tissue penetration. Classical Ayurvedic examples include ginger (Zingiber officinale), which boosts digestive fire and drives herbs deeper into the tissues; honey (madhu), known for its scraping and penetrating qualities; and ghee (ghrita), which nourishes while carrying herbs deep into subtle channels.
Other recognised yogavahi include pippali (Piper longum) and aloe vera, both of which enhance bioavailability. Together, these catalysts make herbal formulations more effective and targeted.
