Venotonic
Venotonic herbs help to support the tone, integrity and function of veins thereby improving venous circulation and efficiency. The mechanisms of action vary from strengthening vascular connective tissue, reducing capillary permeability and improving microcirculation.
Some venotonics also have antioxidant and anti-inflammatory actions which helps to reduce venous congestion and protect the venous endothelium from oxidative stress and damage. They can be applied to treat chronic venous insufficiency, varicose veins and haemorrhoids by improving the integrity and function of veins.
Examples include horse chestnut (Aesculus hippocastanum), ginkgo (Ginkgo biloba) and witch hazel (Hamamelis virginiana).
