Rubefacient
Rubefacient herbs, also referred to as counter irritants, are applied externally to promote blood flow by capillary dilation. They promote warmth and visible redness in the local area.
The circulatory stimulant properties act to reduce a deeper inflammation by drawing blood away from the affected area and towards the surface of the skin. The warming sensation helps to provide relief from pain, swelling and tension in musculoskeletal conditions. They can be applied to relieve arthritic conditions, sprains, strains or muscle injury.
Examples of rubefacients include chilli (Capsicum minimum), horseradish (Amoracia rusticana) and mustard (Brassica spp.).
