Throat soothing (kanthya)
Kanthya herbs are celebrated in Ayurveda for their special affinity with the throat, voice, and upper respiratory passages, helping soothe irritation, reduce dryness, and support clear, comfortable speech. Their actions are typically demulcent, warming or mildly expectorant, depending on the herb.
Liquorice (Glycyrrhiza glabra) is a classic kanthya remedy, prized for its sweet, soothing, mucilage‑rich qualities that coat and protect the throat. Long pepper (Piper longum) offers warming, stimulating action that clears mucus and enhances vocal clarity. Other traditional kanthya herbs include sariva (Hemidesmus indicus), sugar cane root (Saccharum officinarum) and cardamom (Elettaria cardamomum) with its aromatic, soothing, voice‑enhancing properties.
