Stop bleeding (shonita sthapana)
Shonita sthapana herbs stabilise blood flow, balance excess pitta dosha and support the body’s natural ability to stop bleeding in both acute and chronic bleeding disorders. Their actions are typically astringent, sweet, cooling and slimy, helping strengthen vessel walls and reduce heat‑driven bleeding. Many of this classical herb group also have a purifying action on blood.
A key classical example is liquorice (Glycyrrhiza glabra), along with food substances sugar candy and honey, known as madhu in Ayurveda. These herbs are used in raktapitta (bleeding disorders driven by heat) including nosebleeds, menorrhagia, spotting, bleeding piles and gums.
