Pain relieving (vedana sthapana)
Vedana sthapana herbs have analgesic properties that help pacify aggravated vata dosha. They typically have katu (pungent) or tikta (bitter) qualities, with energetics that can be warming, stimulating, or gently cooling depending on the plant.
Examples include cloves (Syzygium aromaticum), an aromatic spice that reduces toothache, muscular tension and digestive discomfort; ashoka (Saraca indica), which is particularly effective for pelvic and menstrual pain; ginger (Zingiber officinale) whose pungent nature reduces vata-related pain, especially in joints and digestion; and turmeric (Curcuma longa), excellent for inflammatory pain and tissue irritation.
These herbs act by reducing inflammation and restoring ease to the affected tissues.
