Increase lactation (stanya janana)
Stanya janana herbs promote and increase lactation by nourishing rasa dhatu and supporting hormonal balance. They typically exhibit madhura rasa (sweet taste), snigdha (unctuous) and guru (heavy) guna, shita virya (cooling potency), and madhura vipaka, which enhance nourishment and stabilise vata dosha while calming pitta. As these properties all increase kapha dosha, one must take care not to aggravate in excess.
Key examples include fennel (Foeniculum vulgare), which improves milk flow and shatavari (Asparagus racemosus), a primary Ayurvedic galactagogue and rasayana for the female reproductive system. Another key herb is musta (Cyperus rotundus) which reduces congestion, along with cumin (Cuminium cyminium).
