Clear the head (shirovirechana)
Shirovirechana herbs clear the orifices of the head (the nasal passages, sinuses, and upper respiratory tract) by expelling excess kapha dosha, relieving congestion, and sharpening the senses. Their actions are typically penetrating, aromatic and stimulating, helping to open blocked channels and restore clarity.
Vacha (Acorus calamus) is a classical shirovirechana herb, known for its sharp, dispersing qualities that clear heaviness and dullness from the head. Cloves (Syzygium aromaticum) offer a warming, aromatic action that helps open the sinuses and relieve stagnation. Other traditional examples include black pepper (Piper nigrum) and pippali (Piper longum), both used to clear kapha from the head.
