Aphrodisiac (vajikarana)
Vajikarana are herbal aphrodisiacs described in Ayurveda that enhance sexual desire, vitality and overall reproductive health. It is derived from the words vaji (horse) and karana (to produce), symbolising virility and potency. They work by strengthening the reproductive organs, improving stamina, and nourishing shukra dhatu (reproductive tissue responsible for fertility and vitality). Vajikarana herbs can also have a hormonal effect.
Common examples include kapikacchu (Mucuna pruriens), which promotes sperm count and libido; ashwagandha (Withania somnifera), known for reducing stress and building strength; shatavari (Asparagus racemosus), which enhances female fertility; and gokshura (Tribulus terrestris), valued for improving energy and reproductive performance.
